〈母親的掃把〉出自宮崎駿動畫《魔女宅急便》，曲名又名〈索娜的委託〉，也曾以〈林蔭大道〉的曲名出現在《新風之國度》這本吉他譜集裡。

《魔女宅急便》鎖定的觀眾群，是二十幾歲剛畢業、要踏進社會職場的年輕女性，所以動畫中有囂張跋扈的前輩、裝熟搭訕的男子、態度不好的客戶，也有初入新環境的迷茫及沮喪。

動畫進行中，貫串起不同階段的劇情變化、也最關鍵的情感象徵，莫過於魔女用以飛行的飛天掃把了。

可能不如光輪兩千或火閃電的華麗名貴，女主角琪琪用的是母親曾用過的老舊掃把，從剛踏上旅程的「家業」承接開始，一直到抵達異鄉之後的奮鬥、失去魔力的挫折、掃把損毀的難過、改騎拖地刷而變成小鎮英雄的結尾，騎乘工具一直陪伴在琪琪身邊，也有了不同的階段性象徵。

有趣的是，琪琪其實早在一開始出發前就做好了自己的新掃把，但「琪媽」卻非常堅持要琪琪使用媽媽的舊掃把，認為舊掃把比較堅固安全。「掃把」在這裡也帶出了子女離家、獨立時，出現在親人之間的情感與互動，孩子總有自己的想法，父母也有自己的堅持吧。

更有趣、似乎也很少人發現的一點是，當琪琪心不甘情不願地接過媽媽的掃把時，她向自己的寵物黑貓吉吉抱怨道：

「我好不容易才做好新的掃把呢……你說是吧，吉吉？」

沒想到吉吉竟然沒有站在琪琪這邊，反而跟琪琪說：

「我也覺得媽媽的掃把比較好。」

有趣的點在於，動畫監製人鈴木敏夫曾說過：「吉吉其實不是琪琪的寵物，而是她的另一個自我。」母親的掃把象徵著熟悉、安定、家鄉、與依戀，也許在琪琪的內心深處，一樣也覺得媽媽的舊掃把比較好；只是在懷抱雀躍之心離鄉的當下，這份情感只能深藏在另一個「自我」中吧。

在劇情上聊了這麼多，其實單純以音樂的精彩度而言，個人認為這首〈母親的掃把〉也是完全不遜色於劇情的。

The target audience of "Kiki's Delivery Service" is young women in their twenties who have just graduated and are about to enter the workplace. Therefore, the animation features arrogant seniors, men who pretend to be familiar with each other, customers with bad attitudes, and newcomers. Confusion and frustration in the new environment.

As the animation progresses, the most crucial emotional symbol that connects the plot changes in different stages is the flying broom used by the witch to fly.

It may not be as gorgeous and precious as the Nimbus 2000 or Fire Lightning. The heroine Kiki uses an old broom that her mother once used. From the beginning of the journey to the struggle after arriving in a foreign land, From the frustration of losing the magic power, to the sadness of having the broom damaged, to the ending of changing to riding a mop brush and becoming a small town hero, the riding tool has always been with Kiki and has also symbolized different stages.

Interestingly, Qiqi had already made her own new broom before she set out, but "Qi's mother" insisted that Qiqi use her mother's old broom, believing that the old broom was sturdier and safer. The word "broom" here also brings out the emotions and interactions between relatives when children leave home and become independent. Children always have their own ideas, and parents also have their own persistence.

What is even more interesting, and seemingly few people noticed, is that when Kiki reluctantly took over her mother's broom, she complained to her pet black cat, Jiji:

"I finally made a new broom... Don't you agree, Gigi?"

Unexpectedly, Ji Ji did not stand on Qi Qi's side, but said to Qi Qi:

"I also think my mother's broom is better."

The interesting point is that the animation producer Suzuki Toshio once said: "Jiji is not actually Kiki's pet, but her other self." The mother's broom symbolizes familiarity, stability, hometown, and attachment. Perhaps in Kiki's Deep down in her heart, Qi also felt that her mother's old broom was better; but as she left her hometown with such joy in her heart, this emotion could only be hidden deep in another "self".

Having talked so much about the plot, in fact, purely in terms of the wonderfulness of the music, I personally think that this song "Mother's Broom" is not inferior to the plot at all.
